In August, we at mundialis had the pleasure of attending FOSS4G 2022 in Florence. As it was again a face-to-face event, there were many opportunities to talk to other participants, exchange ideas, develop ideas and of course listen to a number of excellent talks (core conference programme). The beautiful city of Florence at the end of August was an excellent place to hold FOSS4G 2022. The conference also had a lot to offer in terms of culinary delights, with more than 1000 participants enjoying Tuscan specialities.
The conference took place from 22 to 28 August. The week started with two workshop days. Here we offered the following two workshops:
- A gentle introduction to actinia: geoprocessing in the cloud (Carmen Tawalika & Markus Neteler)
- GRASS GIS for remote sensing data processing and analysis (Veronica Andreo, CONAE & Markus Neteler)
In the core conference (streamed in parallel for non-attendees in the online channel) we presented the following main talks:
- News from actinia – let’s STAC! (Carmen Tawalika, Markus Neteler, Jorge Herrera & Anika Weinmann)
- State of GRASS GIS (Markus Neteler & the GRASS GIS Team)
- Developing a pilot method to measure biodiversity related financial risk at financial portfolio level using Earth Observation and other spatially explicit data (Hinrich Paulsen & Momen Mawad)
- LOOSE: Combining loosely coupled components into coherent architecture (Markus Metz & the LOOSE Project Team)
- The GreenUr project: creating an application in QGIS to manage the impacts of urban green spaces on human health (Markus Neteler, Markus Metz, Marc Jansen & Anika Weinmann)
There were also two exciting lightening talks:
- Connecting tribes: how we connected the GRASS GIS database natively to GeoServer (Markus Neteler, Carmen Tawalika, Marc Jansen, Markus Metz & Anika Weinmann)
- Making free climate and weather data more usable – status, ideas and products resulting from the research project “FAIR” (Till Adams & Marc Jansen)
… as well as in the academic track this lightening talk:
- OSGeo, Persistent Identifiers and the shape of things to come (Peter Löwe, Markus Neteler)
At the weekend we were active at the OSGeo Community Sprint:
We had the opportunity to enjoy culture in the evening besides the “Icebreaker” and the gala dinner (with live music session!), as Florence is the city of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Galileo Galilei. The atmosphere at the conference was excellent and we made a lot of (new) contacts.
A summary of the contributions can also be found here: https://mundialis.github.io/foss4g2022/
The videos of the presentations will soon be available on the conference page.
