Our presentations at the Living Planet Symposium 2022 also represent the successful completion of the VALE project (Development and VALidation of earth observation-based indicators for the monitoring of the Sendai framework using the example of flooding in Ecuador). Together with our partners from United Nations University we explored how remote sensing data can be used for the calculation of indicators of the Sendai framework for disaster risk reduction. The project focused on flood damage statistics in Ecuador (see also news article). mundialis developed fully automated algorithms to derive flood statistics from Sentinel-1 SAR data which can be applied for any region or time of interest. A close collaboration was established with the Ecuadorian national service for disaster and risk management during several workshops online and on site in Ecuador.
Many of the resources developed in the course of the project have now been published with free access:
- GRASS GIS Add-ons for Sentinel-1 processing and flood mapping
- Learning resources and tutorials for the calculation of an exemplary Sendai indicator based on Sentinel-1 data, published on the GEO Knowledge Hub
- Article on the VALE methodology in the journal Progress in Disaster Science
